Tuesday December 29th, 2009 - Local RCMP Officer Out Of The Hospital Following Christmas Car Crash
The local corporal that was injured in a roadblock accident on Christmas day has been cleared to leave the hospital. A woman who was trying to avoid the roadblock crashed her car into the officers parked car.
Recently given a promotion to corporal, the veteran of 18 years on the force only recently relocated to the Burnaby area from Alberta. Not many in the area would consider this a hospitable welcome to the area, however the officer was very clear that this is part of the job and he is fine. A high speed chase followed with the woman driving her car through the Fraser Valley from Chilliwack before eventually being stopped in Vancouver.
It all started when the woman was suspected of robbing an Esso station in Chilliwack with a gun. A local officer in the Chilliwack area pursued but was unable to get her to pull her car over and was forced to stop pursuit out of safety concerns.
The chase came to a violent conclusion when the woman tore through a roadblock in the Burnaby area, running over a spike belt. As she ran over the belt she lost control of the vehicle, which then plowed in the police car. Thankfully the officer only suffered minor injuries, even though he was knocked unconscious by the crash.
