Bruce Haden transformed the old Koos Garage in Strathcona into a group of townhouses in 2001, when he had joined the architectural firm of Hotson Bakker. In purchasing one of the townhouses as his own, Haden wanted to emphasize the value of the up-and-coming neighbourhood, as well as be within a short distance of his office.
Since then, Haden has come to embrace his 850-square-foot home. The townhouse’s value of some $700,000 is more than twice what he paid for it. Despite the continuing presence of a few rough elements in Strathcona, Haden feels at home with the area and its quirky charm.
Given the small size of the dwelling, Haden has been forced to be more creative than usual. A garage doubles as a party room. The dining room table, designed by Haden, can be used for cozy gatherings, or to seat 12 guests. Window ledges become seats at parties.
By far, the most unique item in Haden’s home is the master bed that hides a bathtub. The device has become the center of attention at parties. In addition to saving valuable space, the contraption is located in a part of the home that features a view of MacLean Park.
Haden enjoys being with his neighbours. Given his home’s large windows and proximity to other homes, Haden’s privacy is at a premium. His point of view is refreshing: He feels that in today’s big cities, privacy can be attained, but communities are more challenging to build. Haden has succeeded in bringing vitality to his corner of Strathcona.
