Monday March 15th, 2010 - Report: Vancouver Job Outlook Improving Versus Last Year

Job hunters in the Vancouver market can expect somewhat better hiring prospects during the second quarter of this year.  This news comes from a survey released March 6 from Manpower Canada.  According to the report, some 19 percent of employers in the area expect to do some hiring between April and June.  With ten percent planning layoffs, the net employment projection is at nine percent.

Employment conditions are expected to be the same among 70 percent of the employers surveyed.  Hakan Bozkaya, who is the manager of the Manpower office in Vancouver, said that this outlook is much more positive than that released a year ago, which indicated a minus one-percent drop in hiring.  He said that this report seems to represent an indication that the economy is recovering.

Although the hiring outlook for the second quarter is down two points from that of the first quarter, Bozkaya said that the first-quarter projections were influenced by the many jobs needed for the Olympics.  He indicated that the plans for the second quarter actually show that businesses are returning to their usual hiring practices.

Throughout western Canada, the public utilities and transportation sectors how the highest job prospects, with a 20-percent employment projection.  The financial, real estate and insurance markets show a healthy need for employees, as well, with an 18-percent increase in prospective jobs.  Coming in behind these businesses are the construction and mining industries, which are expected to post a 14-percent increase in hiring.  The hiring market for all of Canada is at seven percent, down by three points versus the first quarter, but six points greater than the outlook posted a year ago.
