Where will you be at 8:30pm this Saturday March 27th? That at first appears to be a backwards CSI question. But it is really meant to make you aware of Earth Hour 2010. What started in Australia back in 2007 is now a global event that lets cities, towns, governments, businesses and individuals show their support for environmental change by turning their lights off for one hour at 8:30pm local time. It is hoped that a billion people will take place in this Saturday’s event.
Already over 200 cities and 105 countries have committed to the lights out hour. The World Wildlife Fund, initiators of the event is encouraged by the global commitment. Last year Canada had more than 10 million citizens participate. It is expected we will exceed that number this go round.
Toronto will dim its CN Tower. Vancouver will dim lights at Library Square, City Hall and the Museum and Space Centre and turn off flood lights on the Burrard Street Bridge. Downtown Edmonton will turn off its lights. Municipal buildings in Montreal will go dark.
Even the Sphinx in Egypt will be bathed only by the light of the moon for one brief hour on March 27th 2010. Think the pharaohs will be watching?
