The theory is that more people would recycle if they could go to a one stop depot to take care of all their recycling chores in one fell swoop. The Greater Vancouver Regional District board tends to buy into that theory but wants a solid business plan put together before it considers a multimillion dollar project to build such facilities.
The proposed centres are part of a solid waste management plan that includes innovative ideas like creating bio-fuel from food waste and requires commercial properties and multi-family homes to recycle. The first two facilities were planned for Coquitlam and Surrey, giving residents a convenient place to drop off old electronic items and perhaps even mattresses. This would make recycling less time consuming and more appealing to the average person, who now must travel from place to place to discard various items.
Part of what must be figured out is how these centres will work with the ones already in place. Local governments in some communities are already footing the bill for existing recycling depots. The other item for consideration is the gradual change of responsibility for disposal of used items such as tires, computers and the like, from municipalities to sellers of those items. No one wants to approve funding for a municipal project that in a few years might be obsolete because of this growing trend.
