Thursday November 5th, 2009 - Designing on a Budget

When looking at homes many times the buyer will often buy the best home that they can get and end up at the top end of their budget. By doing this they are leaving little room for improvements. Therefore when trying to fix up the appearance of their home they end up working on a tight budget and needing the best tips for the least amount of money.

One great thing to do when looking into these types of home improvements is to put standard tiles in a creative pattern. Basically you can purchase standard twelve inch tiles much cheaper than tiles that are patterned. Further if you purchase these tiles you can lay them in a pattern which you arrange for yourself. There are so many different ways that you create a unique look by just arranging regular tiles in a specific pattern.

Another great money saving tip is to use stock and basic items when at all possible. When renovating a kitchen you can actually use basic cabinets for the lower cabinets and upgrade for the cabinets that are more apparent at eye level. This can really save you a lot of money in the long run.

Mixing and matching items that are cheap and more expensive is another great tip for designing on a budget. Basically you can purchase a lot of the things around your home at discount stores but when you add a few key pieces that are from higher priced and nicer stores you are able to save money and still make your home look like you spent more money. The idea is to accessorize with pieces that cost more while your big purchases are all affordable.

You can also work to enhance your own curtains and drapes to save yourself bundles of money. Since window treatments are often one of the most expensive things in a home it is important to consider that you will be able to find basic window treatments and add your own embellishments to make them your own.

Accenting your architecture is something that can increase the appearance of your home rather quickly and for little money. You can repaint your trim and molding in a different color to help your room to pop or any number of other improvements.

If you can get crafty and add a little bit of fabric to the end of a cheap shower curtain then you can make one that looks like it cost much more. Utilize local artwork to make a big impact. Basically you can buy locally made art pieces from up and coming artists for an incredible price. If you purchase smaller pieces you can give them a great mat and frame and instantly display them in another way.
